Description / Abstract:
This standard for primary (dry) unit cell and multicell batteries
includes nomenclature, sizes, tests, safety, handling, and performance
for the following:
(1) Carbon zinc batteries (LeClanche and zinc-chloride types)
(2) Alkaline manganese dioxide batteries
(3) Mercuric oxide batteries
(4) Silver oxide batteries
(5) Zinc air batteries
The tests specified are designed to evaluate the performance of the cells and batteries under simulated service conditions. The battery types listed, although not intended to be all inclusive, do represent most of those available to the consumer and, therefore, merit consideration in future designs of equipment.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to maintain conformation of the different types of batteries. Primary (dry) unit cell and multicell batteries shall be nonrechargeable, nonrefillable, have a nonspillable electrolyte, and be useable in any position.
