This year marked the seventh State of theIndustry (SOTI) study, AWWA's annual surveyof how water professionals perceivecritical concerns confronting the industrytoday. Responses received in 2010 made itclear that repercussions from the economicdownturn of the past two years continue toreverberate through the industry, affectingvirtually every aspect of operations.Business factors continued to reign as thechief concern among the more than 2,000respondents. Other top issues included infrastructure,source water supply, regulatoryconcerns, and workforce issues. Respondentsrated the overall "soundness," or health ofthe water industry, as about the same as lastyear. Data were broken out according to thefive regions to gain a more localized perspectiveon industry soundness and critical issues.Utility capital spending for 2011 was projectedto drop modestly by about 1% overall.Responses indicated that utility sources ofcapital have shifted dramatically as the hardrealities of the economic downturn sink in.Working with its broad membership, AWWAis seeking solutions to all the issues identifiedin the report, with a particular focus on meetingthe funding challenges.Includes tables, figures.
