Full Description

Many water utilities historically have producedhighly effective manganese (Mn)removal by maintaining an active manganesedioxide (MnOsubx(s)/sub) surface on their filter mediathat adsorbs soluble Mn. This process requiresthe presence of free chlorine to regenerate themedia or the system fails, and some utilitieshave ceased adding free chlorine before theirfilters to pursue treatment goals such as disinfectionbyproduct control or biological filtration.Often the result is elevated Mn levels inthe finished water and a correspondingincrease in consumer complaints. This research demonstrated the use ofMnOsubx(s)/sub-coated media as a postfiltrationadsorptive contactor to provide cost-effective,efficient soluble Mn removal across arange of hydraulic loading rates, solutionpH, influent Mn levels, and hypochlorousacid concentrations. Integration of the technologyinto treatment plants, via either newdesign or retrofit, could provide effectiveMn control, especially at facilities seeking toeliminate free chlorine application to dual mediafilters and/or establish biofiltrationacross the filters.Includes 24 references, figures.
