This article provides insights for utility managerswho have an "ear" to the conversationabout what their peers across the countrybelieve to be the most important issues affectingtheir utilities, and what they believe are possiblesolutions. In a series of lunchtime workshopsheld across the country over the courseof 2009, managers discussed the effects of fiveareas on their utilities: environment, finance, infrastructure, workforce, and community.Within these five areas the major issuesthat surfaced were remarkably consistent, given the diversity of the participants. Oneespecially significant finding was the need forutility managers to continue talking to oneanother in order to move collaborativelytoward solutions.
