This article provides insights into the way theAustralian water sector is trying to link theconcepts of asset management and sustainability,and where there are remaining challenges.Australia's water sector has made a strongcommitment to broadening the focus of assetmanagement to take into account sustainabilityprinciples. There are, however, a range of challengesto be met if this aspiration is to beturned into a reality.This research was undertaken to determinethe level of progress that has been made andto identify remaining challenges with theexplicit aim of identifying where research canbe undertaken to help and what issues waterutilities need to address.Integrating sustainability principles intoasset management will expand the focus ofdecision-making and require consideration ofbroader social and environmental issues inall aspects of a water business. This changeis necessary if the water sector is to contributeto the sustainability objectives of thelarger society. Includes 25 references, table, figures.
