Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of an Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) approach for thedevelopment of capital and operational plans for the Edmonton, Alberta, Canadawater system. It differs from the traditional approach in that it includes both supplyand demand side programs to reduce capital expenditures to meetcustomer demands. Project objectives include: develop a 600-year (1500 to 2100) record of the hydroclimate of the NorthSaskatchewan River basin above Edmonton to assist EPCOR Water Serviceswith preparation for the impacts of climate change on water supplies; derive a paleo-hydroclimate record for the interpretation of the forcing ofhydrological change over the past 500 years;develop historical and future climate scenarios at the temporal andspatial scale appropriate for watershed modeling;calibrate and validate distributed physical-conceptual climatologic andhydrological simulation models to provide a realistic physicalrepresentation of hydrological variables;simulate hydrologic response to future climate scenarios; and, project flood and drought frequencies to assess risk and provide watermanagers with future water supply scenarios. The Government of Alberta's CumulativeEffects Framework is presented, along with Alberta's Water for Life strategy, regional partners, integrated watershed management planning, and policy in action at a local level - Industrial Heartland Example. Includes tables, figures.
