Geologic carbon sequestration involves the injection of carbon dioxide (COsub2/sub) intosuitable reservoirs such as the Mt. Simon Sandstone, which is the basal sandstone of theIllinois Basin. A monitoring, verification, accounting (MVA) program is an essentialpart of current carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. The goals of an MVAprogram include providing an accurate accounting of stored COsub2/sub and a high level ofconfidence that the COsub2/sub will remain sequestered permanently. Through its RegionalCarbon Sequestration Partnerships, the U.S. Department of Energy has funded thisdemonstration project for the capture and storage of COsub2/sub from the Archer DanielsMidland ethanol plant in Decatur, Illinois. This project will test the capability of a deepsaline reservoir (the Mt. Simon Sandstone) to store COsub2/sub. Over a three-year period, onemillion tons of COsub2/sub will be injected into this sandstone at a depth of approximately6,500 feet (2,000 m) through an injection well that has been permitted as a Class IUnderground Injection Control (UIC) well by the Illinois Environmental ProtectionAgency.
