Full Description

Point-of-use (POU) water treatment technologies have been identified as successfuloptions for providing safe water to rural households. Two filtration technologies have been widelyimplemented across Cambodia and worldwide, ceramic water filters and BioSand filters (Brown, 2007;Brown et al, 2007; Elliot et al, 2008; Duke et al, 2008; Brown et al, 2009; Liang and Sobsey, in press). BioSand and ceramic filters have been demonstrated as capable of reducing diarrheal disease by as much as 49% in several epidemiology studies conducted in Cambodia and other developing countries(Brown, 2007; Liang and Sobsey, in press). This paper presents data on the chemical and microbial performance of these two technologies in the field on various Cambodian source waters. The paper evaluates whether these technologies are capable of consistently meeting World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines in Cambodia. Includes 10 references, tables.
