This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the Long Beach Water Department (LBWD) demonstration facility and plant performance. Study hypotheses included the following:fouling is not easily detected by monitoring plant (system)level pressures, flows, and concentrations until it is severe(i.e., thick fouling layers); and,viable bacteria colonize the membranes, but fouling is notobserved until adequate nutrients are available to stimulatebacterial growth and biofilm formation. Study objectives were to:verify the presence of fouling material on seawater NF/ROmembranes at LBWD;identify the type of fouling material that accumulates onseawater NF/RO membrane surface at LBWD; and,evaluate the chemical cleaning methods for removing foulingmaterial from seawater NF/RO membranes at LBWD. Experimental methods presented include cleaning protocols and autopsy analyses. Summary indicates that: no evidence of fouling from plant level operational data; autopsy results demonstrated thatfirst pass membranes fouled similarly, there was very little fouling on NF pass 2, and there was viable, culturable marine bacteria on all membranes; cleaning results indicated thatcommercial cleaning was more effective for SWRO than SWNF.
