Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of West Basin Municipal Water District (WBMWD). The executive summary states that previous work at WBMWD showedthat chloraminating seawater madea "free" residual that oxidized the reverse osmosis(RO) membranes. This workconfirmed that both the amperometricand DPD methods for chlorine reporta "free" residual when conventionalchloramination methods are applied inseawater, and this workconfirmed that the residual present ismonobromamine. This work also showed that when pre-formedchloramines are added to seawater, nobromamine is formed and neither theamperometric or DPD methods reporta "free" residual. With the support of the WateReuseFoundation, WBMWD is now doing pilotstudies to further examine the idea. Study hypothesis states that preformed chloramines can be used, and theabsence of "free" chlorine can be tentativeevidence that monobromamine is absent. Project tasks included: manufacturing chloramines; selecting residual measurementmethod and characterizing its response; and, confirming that "free chlorine" is not formed. Includes figures.
