New desalinationtechnologies in development that might represent a new paradigm include evaporation, forwardosmosis, membrane distillation, active membranes. Research in each of these technologies isstill at the fundamental research level, with minimal applied research currently available. In thispaper, the authors describe the current limits of reverse osmosis technology, and therole of bridge technologies. An overview of the most promising "new paradigm" technologiesare presented, along with a balanced opinion on the challenges that must be over-come inorder for them to be implemented.
