This study seeks to develop an empirical model that elucidates the benefits and limitations of anintegrated reverse osmosis (RO) / forward osmosis (FO) system for enhanced water recoveryduring brackish water desalination. Several experiments were conducted to determine thediffusive behavior of various inorganic constituents ubiquitous to brackish groundwater. Masstransport observations were incorporated into an empirical model that provides critical insightinto the operation of combined RO/FO systems, particularly regarding solute transport andaccumulation in such systems. The performance modeling of an integrated RO/FO system servesto show that the current state of FO membrane materials is limiting the processes viability forlarge-scale commercialization.
