Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation, the Stage 2 D/DBP Rule, and the New York City (NYC) water system. The goals of the study were to develop a Stage 2 DBP compliancestrategy for NYC, including treatment (filtration, MIEX, etc.), system optimization (source water, chlorination treatment, distribution system), and chloramine feasibility. DBP formation control options are presented and include: adjust chlorination; reduce organic matter; optimize water age in distribution system; and, chloramination. A laboratory chloramination study is presented and examined the following: the formation of THMs and HAAsunder chlorination and chloraminationconditions; the formation of nitrogenatedDBPs; and, the potential impacts of chloramineson lead/copper corrosion. The chloramines study conclusions indicate: HAA and THM levels can besignificantly reduced under chloramination conditions; NYC could comply with the Stage 2 DBP Rule; NDMA and organic cyanides were not found; lead and copper corrosion no worse than with freechlorine; but, concerns remain with nitrification, nitrogen loading to WWTPs, increased operational requirements; and, stress-corrosion cracking still being evaluated by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. Includes table, figures.
