This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of typical foulants in waterand wastewater. Research objectives were to: investigate the impact of differentdissolved organic foulants on combinedfouling; and, elucidate the mechanismsresponsible for the enhanced fluxdecline during combined fouling oforganic and colloidal foulants. The experimental approach included:characterizing organic-colloid and organic-membraneinteractions bymeasuring adsorption of organic foulants onsilica surface;characterizing the surface properties of the silicacolloids and the membrane surface in thepresence and absence of the organic foulants; and,cross-flow membrane filtration experiments. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: different dissolved organic compounds havevery different effects on the fouling behaviorof silica colloids;dissolved organic matter may affect colloidaldeposition by modifying surface properties ofthe colloid and the membrane;hindered back diffusion can act as acombined fouling mechanism; and, cake layer structure may be an importantfactor in combined fouling.
