Full Description
This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the project that included the following: with ultraviolet- (UV)-oxidation, better removal of polar contaminants(e.g. NDMA) than e.g. granular activated carbon (GAC);with UV-oxidation, better inactivation of e.g.Cryptosporidium;chlorine and ozone oxidation can cause genotoxic byproducts; and, genotoxicity tests after UV-disinfection give varying results. Studies performed include: pre-treated Meuse water (Dunea) treated with UV/Hsub2/subOsub2/sub inpilot reactor (KWR) with MP lamps, autumn 2007;pre-treated Ohio River water (GCWW) treated with UV andUV/Hsub2/subOsub2/sub in pilot reactor with MP lamps, autumn 2008; and, samples extracted and genotoxicity analyzed. The treatment protocol for the Meuse River water is presented, along with the treatment protocol for the Ohio River water, solid phase extraction (SPE), genotoxicity, gene mutations bacteria - Ames or Ames II, and chromosome mutations - comet. Results are provided for Meuse Comet, Ames II, Ohio River Comet, and Ohio River Ames II. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: genotoxic compounds are formed during UV-oxidation;formation of these compounds is higher in absence ofHsub2/subOsub2/sub than in presence - photolytic process responsible?;GAC can remove all genotoxicity, at least when virgin orreactivated; and, toxicity assays show value in screening water for toxicchemicals. Includes table, figures. Product Details
