Full Description

Inima USA Corporation and Aquaria Water, LLC recently constructed a desalination plant on the Taunton River inDighton, Massachusetts. To protect aquatic resources, they installed a Filtrex Filtration System comprised of racksof candles through which water from the river was withdrawn. The pore size (40 m) of the Filtrex candles wassufficiently small to prevent entrainment of all ichthyoplankton and other small organisms. The low through-porevelocity (0.2 ft/s) prevented impingement of juvenile and adult fish. To determine susceptibility ofichthyoplankton to impingement, Inima/Aquaria contracted Alden to conduct tests in a small, laboratory flume witheggs and larvae of the primary species of interest (blueback herring and alewife). The tests were designed toestimate impingement rates and survival of each species and life stage tested. Includes tables.
