This paper discusses a spreadsheet tool that was developed and utilized to conduct a general desktop mixingevaluation of storage tanks. Physical and operational characteristics of distribution systemstorage tanks were used as inputs to the spreadsheet to evaluate the mixing conditions. For thisanalysis, the required physical characteristics of the tanks was obtained from as-built designdrawings and the operational characteristics were obtained from supervisory control and dataacquisition (SCADA) data. The results from the general evaluation performed with thespreadsheet tool were used to help select the tanks that would undergo additional computationalfluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and water quality measurements (temperature profiles). Theseadditional more detailed evaluations were then used to verify the results of the spreadsheetmixing evaluation tool. The general and detailed mixing evaluations can be used as the basis forrecommendation improvements or operation changes to improve mixing and water quality withinstorage tanks.
