Hydraulic models of water distribution systems arebecoming increasingly complex and are being used formore applications. The cost of building and maintainingthese models is also increasing. The trend inhydraulic modeling has been to integrate the vastamount of data contained in a utility's constantlychanging geographic information system (GIS) with theless frequently modified hydraulic model. This articleexplains how thoughtful coordination of GIS data andhydraulic model data can minimize the future cost ofhydraulic model development and maintenance. In theindustry, very limited information exists on effectiveways to coordinate these two data sets. The articledescribes tools within GIS and modeling software usedto improve data accuracy as well as protocols that canbe established to allow the transfer of data correctionsor modifications between the model and the GIS. Generalrecommendations are presented to help a utilitymore effectively manage data in order to successfullymaintain a hydraulic model. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
