This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of a full-scale demonstration studyto examine the efficacy of granular activated carbon (GAC)biofilters in a conventional treatment plant retrofit forturbidity/particle removal, and for disinfection byproduct(DBP) formation potential reduction.Additional research objectives included micropollutant removal andmicrobial analysis. The research needs being addressed included:biological filter performance including theimpact of chlorination andparticle removal;organics removal performance of biologicalfilters without ozone includingBOM, NOM and DBP precursor removal andmicropollutant removal; and, population of microorganisms in biological filters. Project location was at the Shades Mountain Filter Plant, part of Birmingham (Alabama) Water Works Board. Project approach included a demonstration plant and a mobile pilot plant, with the project broken down into the following 5 steps: conduct utility survey and literature review;filter performance evaluation;organics removal evaluation;microbial population analysis; and, development of guidance manual and finalTask 5 Report. Includes table, figures.
