Full Description

This powerpoint presentation presents a project by the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority (ACMUA) to expand its filtration facilities to allow for additional capacity, remove a filter from service for maintenance, andmeet the turbidity goal of 0.1 ntu(current turbidity limit of 0.3 ntu). The pilot testing goal was to compare different media configurations at theloading rate of 5.5 gpm/sf. Pilot data compared is presented, along with filter media selection, filter media configurations, filtered water turbidity, unimproved filter deficiencies, implemented improvements, improved backwash sequence, and design challenges. Presentation conclusions indicate the following:higher throughput can be achieved whilemaintaining quality by rehabilitating the filters; savings in capital cost;L/dsup3/sup gives a better representation of particleremoval characteristics of the media; combined sedimentation and filtrationupgrades have reduced filtrate turbidities from0.22 NTU to 0.03 NTU; and,the filter upgrades plus adding air scourreduced backwash water requirements by 66%. Includes tables, figures.
