Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the Baldwin Park Operable Unit (BPOU) located in Southern California's San Gabriel Valley. It was declared a Superfund Site in 1984due to volatile organic chemical (VOC) contamination. The BPOU Committee is profiled, along with its work to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) cleanup requirements andachieve standards for potable use of the treated water. Perchlorate is highlighted as the contaminant of concern, along with perchlorate treatment technologies. The presentation focuses on perchlorate removal by ion exchange (ISEP), along with efforts at brine management. Presentation conclusions indicate that:the BPOU has led the nation in approaches toperchlorate removal, i.e. in2001 the first regenerable IX process installed at La Puente, and in2002 the first single pass IX process installed at Cal Domestic;both regenerable and single pass ion exchangesystems are capable of removing perchlorate;advent of perchlorate-selective resins has madesingle pass IX cost-effective; resin costs less thansalt costs; however, for groundwater contaminated with bothperchlorate and nitrate, other options will need to beconsidered. Includes tables, figures.
