Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of perchlorate detection in water sources and ion exchange resins used for perchlorate removal. The objective of this research wasto use microbial reduction toregenerate resins contaminatedwith perchlorate and nitrate, an environmentallysustainable alternative to resin"load and burn". Process description and experimental approach are provided, along with bioregeneration of perchlorate-selectiveresin, Bioregeneration of Nitrate-selectiveResin, and Fouling Removal afterBioregeneration. Presentation conclusions indicate that: nitrate-selective ion exchange resin loadedwith nitrate and/or perchlorate can beregenerated using a microbial enrichmentculture;similar to nitrate-selective resin, spentperchlorate-selective resin can also beregenerated, thereby preventing "load andburn" of resins; and, resin fouling can be removed by severalfouling removal agents. Resin bioregeneration has several advantages, including:converts perchlorate and nitrate to innocuouschloride and nitrogen gas;makes reuse of perchlorate/nitratecontaminated ion exchange resin possible;has the potential to reduce the cost of ion exchangefor water utilities;technology is environmentally sustainable andminimizes carbon dioxide emissions; and, carbon credit can potentially be awarded towater utilities that do not incineratee resin. Includes table, figures.
