Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the AWWA research policy, and research and uncertainty in science. An example of the scientific article is given, along with communicating research with the public in a 1993 Dateline TV show of an expose of Cryptosporidium in the water. Health effects and monitoring for pharmaceuticals in water are presented, along with issues of split samples in Illinois, and laboratory quality control. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: caution in interpreting pharmaceutical from commerciallaboratories; the labs are not certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA);the methods are not standardized;the results are not comparable between laboratories;the results highlight the need for more research to developreliable testing protocols; and, routine monitoring by water utilities is not advised untilUSEPA methods are developed. Includes tables.
