Full Description

Previously, it was thought that using ultraviolet (UV) disinfection for 4-log virusinactivation would be cost prohibitive due to the high doses required in theLong Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR).However, recent studies (Linden, 2007) have shown that the dosenecessary for 4-log adenovirus inactivation is approximately 40% to 50%lower than the doses published in the LT2ESWTR when polychromaticUV lamps are used (Linden et al 2007). A recent validation usingadenovirus2 demonstrated this in full scale. This study evaluated the costs (i.e., capital, and operation and maintenancecosts) and sustainability of using chlorine or UV disinfection for virusinactivation of groundwater and surface waters. The results of this studyshow that UV disinfection is a cost effective option for select disinfectionscenarios. UV disinfection was also shown to have environmental andrisk benefits when compared to traditional chemical disinfection. Includes 9 references, tables.
