Full Description

This poster paper presents several key factors thatimpact water age in storage reservoirs, including distribution system/facilityoperations, storage type and volume, and the location of storage inregard to the demand areas withina distribution system. Utilities that use chloramination forfinal disinfection in efforts to minimizeDBP formation often experiencenitrification events in storagefacilities as a result of extendedwater age.Maintaining water quality indistribution system storage facilitieshas generally been observed with atwo-prong focus on mixing within thetank and operational considerations tomaximize turnover.Other factors that should be consideredof significant importance in newconstruction are the location of thefacility relative to the system and thetype and volume of the facility.Water quality problems may still existeven with good mixing characteristicsin a storage tank, and improvementsrequired to reduce high water ages forstorage facilities located outside thedemand area can be expensive.EPS modeling can be an effectivetool to identify the effect of storagefacilities on water quality in thedistribution system.
