This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of American Water and the drivers/benefits of using a best practice approach to optimizing thebalance between a utility's operating efficiencies, service levels tocustomers, and operational risks. The elements of a best practice program are presented and include the following:tools;teams;development;prioritization; and,implementation.Examples from American Water's program are provided, and presentation conclusions indicate the following: utilities can improve operations (operating efficiencies, servicelevels to customers, and reduce risks) by applying a BestPractice approach ofestablishing a Governance Program of Policies, Strategies, and Practices;identify stakeholders and establish roles and responsibilities;identify and develop Best Practices, internal/external research;prioritize along the way;plan for change tactically, emotionally, resources;implement Best Practice; and,monitor progress, communicate, adjust.
