Full Description

This powerpoint presentation had the following technical objectives:utilization of a fluidized bed bioreactor (FBR) treatment system totreat 50 gpm of perchlorate laden water into potable water;complete treatment system consists of a fluidized bed bioreactor, aeration vessel, multimedia filter, LGAC unit, and a UV system; and,a year-long testing period was conducted that includedself-seeding of system, downstream equipment effectiveness, challenge experiments involving feed and electrical system shutdowns,on-line nitrate and perchlorate analyzer capabilities, chlorination and UV disinfection studies, andperchlorate spiking study. The technical approach is presented, along with technical progress, a spiking study, and operating costs. Presentation conclusions indicate that:nitrate and perchlorate removed by indigenous bacteria in FBRwithin 27 days of start-up;downstream equipment produced effluent water with oxygen 7.0mg/L, turbidity 0.3 mg/L, TTHM 80 g/L, HAA5 60 g/L, noE.Coli production;challenge experiments demonstrated rebound performance of theFBR as low as 2 hours (no more than 24 hours);nitrate analyzers and perchlorate analyzer were effective, a back-up nitrate analyzer is recommended;disinfection studies demonstrated, CT of 4 and a UV contact time of 6 seconds a log 3+ removal of HPC;spiking study of 1000 g/L of perchlorate, treatment to below California State MCL of 6 g/L of perchlorate, andall other Title 22 requirements met for drinking water. Includes tables, figures.
