Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the drivers for watershed-based performance standards. Project background information includes a brief overview of BWWB, the largestwater utility in the stateof Alabama, providingwater to over 675,000customers.It operates two reservoirsand two "run-of the river"water sources, withdevelopment mostlyprevalent in the CahabaRiver/Lake Purdywatershed. Challenges for watershed protection are presented, and the approach, or technical basis of the plan included: evaluate present operationat the Shades Mountainfilter plant relative tohistorical/existing waterquality conditions;evaluate point and non-pointsources that drive reservoir water quality (WQ);determine changes inwater quality that willsignificantly increase operation and maintenancecosts and/or necessitatemajor capitalimprovements;evaluate reservoir WQ(assimilative capacity); and, develop watershed protectionpolicy that minimizes the risk ofthe threshold identified in step 2being exceeded. Present operational costs, treatment plant impacts, basis for watershed protection, watershed protection policy focus, and applicability are all presented. Includes tables, figures.
