Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of reducing total trihalomethane (TTHM) and haloacetic acid (HAA5) concentrations for Stage 2 compliance, and using filter adsorbers for Stage 2 compliance. The City of Birmingham, Alabama's experience with conducting a year-long pilot study to evaluate thefeasibility of utilizing granular activated carbon (GAC) filter adsorbers to reduce disinfection byproduct (DBP) levels. Potential GAC implementationstrategies considered by the Mohawk Valley Water Authority (MVWA) in New York state are presented. A summaryof study results revealed that: under the right circumstances, GAC filteradsorbers can be an effective Stage 2 compliancestrategy;much less expensive than post-filter contactors; avoid potential unintended consequences w/chloramines;Birmingham, Alabama - biofiltration without pre-ozone; and,MVWA - enhanced total organic carbon (TOC) removal for limited periods. Includes tables, figures.
