Direct application of low levels of chlorite is a very effective way to control nitrificationin the distribution system. However, before chlorite can be fully utilized as a nitrificationinhibitor, the effects of important water quality parameters on chlorite decay must bedetermined. This study examined variables individually which include pH, initial chloriteconcentration, temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and chloramine. Resultsobtained from batch experiments indicate that chlorite itself is stable in buffered waterwith pH from 7 to 9, temperature from 15 to 35 C, and in the presence of 1 to 3 mg/L ofDOC from different sources. On the other hand, significant chlorite decay was observedin the presence of chloramine. Includes 24 references, tables, figures. Product Details
