Full Description

The City of Kennewick, Washington owns and operates a 12 million gallon perday (MGD) collector well. Collector well #5 (RC5), is located in close proximity to theColumbia River and Columbia Pond, one of the river's small tributaries. In 2004, theWashington Department of Health (WDOH) determined the collector well to be a "groundwaterunder the direct influence of surface water" (GWUDISW). This determination was basedprimarily upon using the relative risk tables in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Microscopic Particulate Analysis(MPA) Consensus Method (USEPA, 1992). In lieu of constructing engineered filtration tocomply with the Surface Water Treatment Rule the utility opted to apply for alternative filtrationtechnology (AFT) credit for Riverbank Filtration as provided under the States regulations. Inorder to obtain the credit, the Washington Department of Health required the City to perform aone-year demonstration study. Includes 2 references, table.
