Full Description

In this paper, natural organic matter (NOM) fraction removal by different anion exchange (IEX) resins wasstudied, as well as the effect of NOM removal on the performance of activated carbon filtration. Surfacewater from the Weesperkarspel treatment plant (WPK) was used for batch experiments. Samples takenbefore and after treatment with resin and granular activated carbon (GAC) were analyzed by measuringdissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ultraviolet (UV) absorbance at 254 nm (UVA254). In addition, NOMcharacterization was done by fluorescence excitation emission matrix (EEM) and liquid chromatographywith organic carbon detection (LC-OCD). By determining Freundlich isotherms, predictions of runningtimes of IEX and GAC filters were made. Lewatit VP OC 1071 and MIEX DOC resin were the bestperforming resins. By first removing NOM with those resins, the life times of GAC filters willincrease by a factor of 10, for DOC removal. Includes 15 references, tables, figures.
