As the world continues to focus on finding newsources of drinking water, increasing attention hasbeen paid to the reverse osmosis (RO) process and,in particular, seawater RO (SWRO). In this articlethe authors discuss how proper pretreatment of seawaterbefore the RO process can have a significantpositive impact on the effectiveness of the SWROprocess as a whole.This is the first study to conduct a side-by-side comparisonof membrane and conventional pretreatmentfor SWRO. Utility managers will benefit from thedescriptions of the methodologies for testing and theperformance comparisons of different pretreatmentstrategies.
