Algal toxins are an issue of concern because of theirwidespread occurrence and potential threat to publichealth. This study monitored algal toxin concentrationsin 33 lakes and reservoirs across the UnitedStates. Total toxin levels were expressed asmicrocystin-LR equivalent concentrations using a commercialenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Although microcystins were detectable in most rawwater samples, concentrations exceeded 1 g/L in only7% of samples, and drinking water treatment processesproved effective for toxin removal. The composition ofdifferent waters appeared to affect the toxin testingmethodology, and further research is necessary toimprove the technique.The US Environmental Protection Agency hasplaced cyanobacteria and their toxins on the CandidateContaminant List for potential future regulation.Where algal blooms are a problem, a simple ELISA testcan be used to monitor microcystin levels. However,this research suggests that most utilities do not need tobe concerned about high concentrations of microcystintoxins in their raw water supplies or the ability ofconventional filtration and disinfection processes toeffectively lower toxin levels.
