Computer modeling has long been touted as a cost-effectivetool with which to study distribution systems formaster planning, system deficiency analysis, and other suchactivities. This article demonstrates full-scale applicationsof computer modeling to ensure regulatory compliancewith disinfection byproduct levels and optimize drinkingwater distribution system water quality. In addition, computermodeling was used to predict the effects of waterutility operations and water treatment processes on distributionsystem water quality, thus allowing utilities to examinemultiple operational changes safely and efficientlybefore pilot-scale testing or full-scale implementation.
