Full Description

Modeling and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) provide two different ways to view the behavior of a waterdistribution system. Traditionally, engineers and operators have used these technologies for differentpurposes. Operators utilize SCADA systems to operate and control the water system in real time, whileengineers primarily use computer models for planning and design purposes. However, with the additionof improved interface tools and software drivers in recent years, SCADA and modeling have beenbrought together to form a powerful tool for both operators and engineers. This paper looks at thesynergies between these two technologies and addresses some of the challenges that utilities andconsultants may encounter as they build a SCADA-integrated hydraulic model. Actual case histories are presented of how modeling and SCADA software have been linked so thatthey can share data. Also, some of the issues and pitfalls in making these technologieswork together are addressed. Includes figures.
