Full Description

As a result of the events of 9/11, chemical weaponscontamination has become a serious consideration. What has become apparent is that most water supplyand distribution systems are vulnerable because of theirexpanse and accessibility. Although there now is recognitionof this vulnerability, little is known about threatscenarios, acute concentrations, and how to detect anassault quickly enough to take emergency response. This study was undertaken to determine whether thenew technology of photoionization/mass spectrometrycould provide early detection of credible threats. This article discusses short-term acute levels andshows that these levels can be reached for crediblethreats. New instrumentation for chemical weaponscontamination screening is simple and fast to use, detects at subacute concentrations, and givesautomated red/green light indications with low false-negativeand false-positive rates. Includes 23 references, tables, figures.
