Full Description

Outbreaks of waterborne disease have been associatedwith rainfall when pathogens are washed fromthe watershed and transported into reservoirs viariverine inflows. To help quantify the concentrationand viability of Cryptosporidium contamination inlakes and reservoirs after such occurrences, theauthors have developed a simple model that can beaccessed online. In addition to the basic dynamics ofinflows, the model includes fate transformations associatedwith temperature, ultraviolet light exposure, and sedimentation. The model's ability to predict inflow characteristicswas tested during several inflows at three reservoirs inAustralia. The data presented demonstrates the model'seffectiveness as well as provides insight into the dynamicsof inflow behavior in reservoirs and the processesaffecting source water supply.Source water management is an increasingly importantarea of the water industry. Water utility operations andeventually public health can benefit from the effective useof a timing tool that can also help reduce treatment costsby selecting the best water for use in the plant. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
