The revised arsenic maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 0.010 mg/L is expected to impactmany water utility systems, particularly those in western states, where high levels of naturally occurringarsenic are more common. An Army installation was faced with treatinggroundwater (GW) to reduce arsenic and fluoride concentrations. Various water treatmenttechnologies were evaluated based on engineering, economic, and regulatory criteria. Waterconservation and source water quality issues also impacted treatment technology selection.Ultimately, activated alumina was deemed most feasible, and will be pilot tested to verifyarsenic and fluoride removal efficiencies and to develop full-scale design data.
