Full Description

This study, sponsored by the American Water Works Association Research Foundation(AwwaRF), evaluated the effect of water quality on the performance of the various arsenic removaladsorbents, which included granular ferric hydroxide (GFH), granular ferric oxide(Bayoxide E-33), titanium dioxide (Metsorb), iron-modified zeolite (Z 33), sulfur-modified iron(SMI), iron-modified activated alumina (Fe-AA) and conventional activated alumina (AA).Intensive bench-scale tests were conducted to assess the water quality effects on the promisingarsenic adsorbents. The results of these tests were used for developing models that would predictthe arsenic adsorption capacities in natural waters. One of the most significant parameters thataffected the performance of the adsorbents is pH. After pH, silica and phosphate were the twomost significant parameters that impacted the arsenic adsorption capacities for the adsorbentsthat were evaluated.Using the models that better predicted the performance of the adsorbents, a spreadsheet-basedtool (Arsenic Adsorbent Design and Costing Tool) was developed. The spreadsheet tool seekswater quality and system information as inputs. Using the inputted parameters, the tool predictsthe performance of the various arsenic adsorbents. The tool computes the capital, operation andmaintenance (O
