Microbial water quality in distribution systems is influenced by a variety of parameters, many ofwhich are associated with biofilm growth. These include: physical parameters such as flowcharacteristics, water age, pH, temperature and pipe material; and, chemical constituents likethe nature and concentration of natural organic matter, the type and concentration ofdisinfectants, and the presence/absence of corrosion control chemicals. All of these combine tocreate an environment that governs the growth and abundance of biofilms in distribution systems.In addition, there are other sources of bacteria in distribution systems including breaches in thephysical integrity or breakthrough from treatment. This paper presentsan overview of the methods for assessing microbial water quality and the factors associated withbiofilm proliferation such as organic carbon, disinfection, and pipe materials.
