Full Description

Monitoring membrane integrity is critical to ensuringwater quality. The current approach involvestaking a rack offline and conducting a pressuredecay test. However, this approach is not in real timeand can be disruptive to production. The authorsexamine how turbidity, a well-accepted measurementof filtered water quality, can be used in a distributedmanner to monitor membrane integrity in real timecost-effectively with distributed laser turbidimetry. Thistechnique can reduce system downtime and rapidlydetect defective membranes. The study results alsoindicate that for monitoring membrane integrity, distributingthe turbidity monitoring instruments may bemore effective than increasing their sensitivity. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
