As development overtakes counties and cities, the utilization of geographic information systems (GIS) for mapping has grown. Field personnel have limited space for carrying hard copy maps and/or CD's that cover their assigned territory. Wireless applications also have their limitations. This paper addresses the use of laptops that maintain Chesterfield County's GIS information for their utility system. It discusses usage, systems maintenance and management's perspective. The use of a Portable Utility Maintenance Application on laptops allows easy transition from one screen to the next to view all mapping needs. It is used in the field, for desktops and service counters. It is an electronic tool that requires a good laptop, little physical space and up to the minute updates.
