Full Description
The ability of hydrous manganese oxide (HMO)and manganese greensand to remove radium inorder to meet the new radionuclides rule is discussed. The authors explain how although HMO andmanganese greensand are normally used to remove thenuisance contaminants of iron and manganese, they arealso a possible means for removing radium. This study was undertaken to determine radiumremoval in pilot- and plant-scale iron and manganeseremoval plants in Brown County, Wisconsin; Knoxville andMarcus, Iowa; Garretson and Elk Point, South Dakota; andLakeville, Hinckley, and Savage, Minnesota.Water suppliers can use the information in this articlein pilot plant studies for the removal of radium byHMO and manganese greensand filtration systems andcompare the associated costs with those of best availabletechnology, such as lime softening, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis.
