Water utility laboratory personnel will findneeded recommendations and guidance on theselection of filter membranes for dissolvedorganic carbon (DOC) and ultraviolet absorbance at254 nm (UV254) measurements. The results of anational survey by the authors, published previouslyin JOURNAL AWWA, indicated that filter selection, filter cleaning, and sample filtration are specificareas in which there are inconsistencies among practitioners. This study was undertaken to provide someguidance on these issues. If followed, the informationin this article should result in more uniformpractices in measuring DOC and UV254 by drinkingwater practitioners.Among 17 filters tested, two hydrophilic polyethersulfonefilters and one hydrophilic polypropylene filterwere the best alternatives for DOC and UV254 measurements.Information in this article will provide significantrefinement to current practices used for measuring DOCand UV254. The article also provides support to theUS Environmental Protection Agency for developing aregulatory protocol for total organic carbon/specificultraviolet absorbance as a part of the Stage 2 Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule. Includes 29 references, tables, figures.
