Inorganic polymer flocculants (IPFs) are used aswater and wastewater treatment reagents. Thesepreproduced IPFs can be considered the secondgeneration of the metal salt coagulants. It hasbecome evident that differences occur in coagulationbetween polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and polyironchloride (PICl), related to basicity (B). The formationand stability of polymers cause significant differentbehavior using PACl and PICl during thecoagulation process. A high B value can be favorablefor PACl preparation, but it is not fit for PICl.Therefore, a scientific design and application areneeded for IPFs according to primary water qualityconditions.The authors sought to answer two questions. First,is there any difference between coagulation with Al(III)and Fe(III) and their hydrolysis products as a result?Second, can iron-based IPFs be equal in efficiency withaluminum-based IPFs? This article addresses the reasonsfor the differences in coagulation and suggests thata different parameter (B value) should be adopted toprepare PICl in comparison with PACl.
