With the implementation of the US Environmental Protection Agency's new MCL for arsenic (from 50 ug/L to 10 ug/L), approximately 4,000 water utilities nationwide will be affected, of which nearly 97% serve less than 10,000 people. In order for water utilities to be in compliance, these utilities will need to remove arsenic from their water using various available treatment technologies (e.g. reverse osmosis, activated alumina, iron-based sorptive media, and ion exchange). Many water treatment utilities, especially the smaller utilities that will be most impacted by the new MCL, do not own the required equipment and must send samples off-site to a contracted or state laboratory for analysis. The goal of this project is to develop a portable technique that could be used in the field, which would give quick and accurate results on the arsenic concentration and would be relatively inexpensive for the utility. The methods being investigated in this paper are based on standard hydride generation followed by arsine detection with a portable gas monitor. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
