Southern Nevada Water System (SNWS) switched from constant rate to variable rate filtration in 1997. By pumping and treating water at maximum rate during nighttime hours and then cutting back during the daytime, when power rates are higher, operating costs have been significantly reduced. There is some concern that variable rate filtration could have a negative impact on filtered water quality. Preliminary studies in 1999 and 2000 showed no such adverse effects at SNWS. The current study further supports this conclusion and suggests that, if the filtration rate is changed gradually over several hours, variable rate filtration can yield improved water quality.
