The Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake and Sandy (MWDSLS) is planning to build a new 70-mgd water treatment facility, currently called the Point of the Mountain Water Treatment Plant (POMWTP). This new plant will treat Provo River water delivered via two systems: the Jordan Aqueduct (JA); the Provo Reservoir Canal (PRC). Prior to the design of this new facility, MWDSLS conducted a pilot study to evaluate three candidate treatment trains. The major objectives of this study, which preceded predesign and design of the new facility, were: to determine the effect of the two different water delivery systems (PRC and JA) on treatedwater quality for the three treatment trains; to collect and analyze unit process and treatment train performance data for the three treatment trains to establish process feasibility and design criteria for the full-scale water treatment plant;to determine preliminary capital, operating and maintenance, and present worth costs for each of the treatment trains evaluated; and, to develop a final treatment train recommendation for the new POMWTP, based on the fullrange of applicable considerations. This paper briefly summarizes key pilot-study results and the treatment train evaluation undertaken to select the processes for the new plant. The final recommendation, based on the pilot study and the process evaluations is also presented. Includes tables, figures.
