An ongoing program which identifies cross connections and requires the appropriate assembly to beproperly installed, tested, and maintained is essential to fulfill most requirements. However, if yourgoverning body does not have requirements, there is still the issue of protecting the water fromcontamination and pollution and the purveyor from potential liability issues. Drinking water is a precious,nonreplenishable commodity which must be protected from the source, through the distribution system, andto the consumer. Implementing and maintaining a cross connection control program can seem like anoverwhelming task. Setting up a program on a strong foundation makes the program affordable, manageableand defendable.The components of a successful program are outlined in this paper and include: training and certification; develop an enforcement document; public education; record keeping; inspections/surveys; assembly installation, testing, maintenance and, ongoing enforcement.
